Today I was introduced to Foursquare. If you know what I’m talking about then you probably know that I am a little late on this. I had no idea what Foursquare was or what it had to offer. So I did a little research and discovered some really interesting information.
Foursquare is an application for cellphones that was launched a few months ago by a team of guys that are sometimes referred to as “Team Foursquare.” The application allows you to take part in social networking all while gaming and earning points for exploring the city that you are in. Interesting right? The application has cool features such as checking in with friends and inviting them to where you are, tips about restaurants and other fun places, and reviews of different venues. Currently, every time you check in you are rewarded points. I couldn’t find any information for what those points get you but hey, at least you could tell your friends you have more points than they do. Let’s just call it climbing the social Foursquare ladder.
As individuals sign-in to certain locations after a certain number of times they are given a badge. Hence the badges seen on other social networks. (You’ve been wondering too, huh?) Even better than that, if a person signs into a location more than anyone else they can become mayor of that place. Who doesn’t want to be a Social Networking Mayor? …I read that Foursquare Mayors even get perks at participating venues. This could get fun.
Users can track everything they have done and share tips with others.
A lot of individuals question whether or Foursquare will become the “new Twitter.” I believe that Foursquare will take off and create new buzz all over the social media world. However, I do not feel like it will replace Twitter. Some of the tools Foursquare offer may not fit well with a lot of current Twitter loyalists. I could see them both being at the top of the social media food chain in the future taking out other not so great sites. (I promise I will not name any.) Foursquare seems like a lot of fun. I was reading over some of the tools that are offered besides what has already been mentioned and I’m trying to figure out exactly who the target public is for the application. I guess as I read a little more I will find out.

So I’m all about knowing how to use something before I download it to my phone. The following video is an interview with members of Team Foursquare (Dennis & Naveen). The information they provide is awesome. I think I may just try it out!!
I was right there with you Talia as far as not knowing anything about this incredible new resource. I think this will start to get some big buzz but I agree with you on the idea that twitter enthusiasts aren’t ready to switch over to foursquare just yet. I can really see this becoming a “must-have” while travelling in the future. One day we may here are grand children saying, “what did people do before foursquare” just like our generation says “what did our parents do without cell phones”. Technology is crazy but it sure is enthralling, especially to public relations students like us! Thanks for the great video also. Your blog looks great and keep up the good work!
